Scholarships

Here you’ll find a list of scholarships geared specifically toward medical assisting certificate and degree programs, along with a customizable database of over 14,000 general scholarships. Medical assistant scholarships are, in many ways, the ideal source of aid, in that money awarded does not need to be repaid. As a prospective student, it is absolutely in your best interest to search for and apply to a number of relevant scholarships.

Of course, scholarships for medical assistants are only a fraction of your aid options. You also need to apply for federal student aid by completing a FAFSA and submitting it to your prospective colleges. Academic institutions and the federal government will use your FAFSA form to determine your eligibility for loans like the Direct Subsidized Loan, Direct Unsubsidized Loan, Direct PLUS Loan and the Federal Perkins Loan Program ― all of which students tend to need in some form or another in order to fully finance their education.

While you search for medical assisting programs, it is very important to note program accreditation, since this can impact the availability of grants and loans. The Office of Federal Student Aid cautions, “If you attend a school that isn’t accredited, you might not be able to get any financial aid. The U.S. Department of Education requires that schools participating in our federal student aid programs be accredited.”

Our list begins with a selection of standout awards specific to MA students. A database of general awards follows the MA scholarships.

The Maxine Williams Scholarship Fund$1,000 and a single-year membership with the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)

AAMA is a society dedicated to the continued education, certification, professional networking and career advancement of medical assistants. This funding opportunity was established in the memory of Maxine Williams, the founder of the AAMA. To meet the medical assisyanscholarship requirements, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and be enrolled in a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Students should not contact the AAMA directly regarding an application form for this medical assistant scholarship. Instead, students must speak with medical assisting program directors at their respective academic institutions to obtain an application. Program directors at CAAHEP-accredited schools are expected to work together with students to complete the application form, which is available on the AAMA website.

Outstanding Student Award$250

The American Medical Technologists (AMT) is a credentialing association that regulates and promotes allied health career standards and methods. AMT offers credentialing exams for a number of laboratory, medical, dental and health education career fields. Students enrolled in allied health academic programs are eligible for nomination by their medical assisting faculty. Award winners will be selected based on a wide range of criteria, including initiative, interpersonal relations, extracurricular activities, program attendance and conduct.

To apply, students must work with their faculty members to complete a nomination form and write a statement on the topic, “How Will AMT Certification Help to Further My Career?” In addition to the monetary award, winning applicants of this scholarship for medical assistants will also receive complimentary AMT National Convention registration and a plaque of recognition.

Scholarship of Excellence$1,000

The Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP) is a nonprofit professional society dedicated to the advancement of Allied Health fields, which includes medical assisting. This scholarship opportunity is open to students enrolled in an Allied Health program run by an ASAHP-member academic institution.

The eligibility requirements for this medical assistant scholarship include the completion of at least one term of study. ASAHP institutions are asked to nominate eligible students for this scholarship award and nominees must provide their resume, CV and a personal essay to be considered for this funding opportunity. Students and their academic institutions can find all nomination and application materials at the ASAHP website.

Technical Writing Award$135 to $200

This is another scholarship for medical assistants provided by American Medical Technologists (AMT), a professional credentialing agency dedicated to allied health professional standards and education. Students currently enrolled in medical assistant programs that lead up to AMT certification are eligible to submit a technical essay for consideration. Essays must be at least 1,000 words and pertain to a technical aspect of healthcare. The full writing guidelines, including formatting requirements, can be found on the scholarship website.

Three winners will be selected for first, second and third prize awards, which are associated with different levels of cash prizes. While the winning essays will be announced at the AMT National Convention, winners do not need to attend this event to receive their cash prize.

Ophthalmic Assistant Certification Grants$50 to $340 discounts for credential exam fees

The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) is a nonprofit credentialing agency dedicated to the advancement of ophthalmology careers and education. Medical assistants who wish to pursue an ophthalmic specialization are invited to apply to a certification grant opportunity.

To apply, candidates must either submit an essay or a video that focuses on one of the following topics: “Why I Want to Advance My Certification Level,” or “Why I Want to Become Certified.” Video submissions can range from 2-3 minutes in length, while essay submissions must be 300-500 words long. Awards will be distributed in the form of credentialing examination discount vouchers.

Allied Healthcare ScholarshipUp to $8,000

The state of California has created a scholarship opportunity open to all students accepted to or enrolled in allied health academic tracks, including medical assistant programs. To qualify for this funding opportunity, applicants have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, be legally eligible to work in California, and available to work at a California health institution in an underserved area for at least one year.

Applicants must also be graduating after January 31, 2015 and be enrolled in at least 6 units. To receive this scholarship award, winners must commit to working full-time at a qualifying California health care facility.

CAMC Foundation Nursing / Allied Health / Medical Student ScholarshipAmount not disclosed

The Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) Health System is a network of hospitals and medical professionals providing patient care in West Virginia. The CAMC Foundation is providing national scholarship opportunities to prospective students pursuing an education in an allied health field, such as medical assisting.

To meet the eligibility requirements, the applicant must be registered in or currently attending an allied health program. Applicants’ most recent high school or college transcript must reflect a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Submission materials include a one-inch binder containing a completed application form, a 1-2 page personal essay, transcript copies, a copy of tax forms, two letters of recommendation, three references and optional community service documentation.

School of Allied Health Tuition Waiver ScholarshipTuition waivers for up to 12 undergraduate credits

This medical assistant scholarship is available exclusively to prospective University of Alaska Anchorage undergraduates who are admitted to a School of Allied Health program, such as medical assisting. Winners will receive a tuition waiver that can be applied toward up to 12 credits per semester.

To qualify, applicants must be enrolled in at least three credits at UAA, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8, and meet “Satisfactory Academic Progress” program standards. Applicants must submit a personal letter to the School of Allied Health explaining why they should receive the tuition waiver, unofficial transcript copies, a projected plan of study and a letter of endorsement from an Allied Health faculty member.

American Medical Technologists$500

The AMT offers five need-based scholarships per year ― each one valued at $500 ― to students who plan to pursue careers in the healthcare industry. Two more scholarships are awarded to outstanding students and winners of the AMT technical writing contest, respectively.

The awards are a bit more restrictive than others on this list: applicants must be in high school and must pursue a course of study certified by the AMT ― medical assistant programs are certified. The form for AMT awards can be found here. All stipulations and restrictions are explained in full on the application.
