Medical assistants (MAs) in Florida aren’t required to register with the state, nor do they have minimum qualifications they must meet for employment. However, obtaining at least a high school diploma or GED is essential to procuring most jobs.
While certification is not mandatory to work as a medical assistant, the state recognizes MAs certified as Registered Medical Assistants by AMT or as Certified Medical Assistants by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
Under direct supervision of a licensed physician, some tasks MAs in Florida are responsible for include:
- Taking vital signs
- Preparing patients for physician’s care
- Administering non-intravenous injections and basic first aid
- Collecting specimen for and performing basic laboratory procedures
