Becoming a medical assistant (MA) in South Carolina begins with earning your high school diploma or GED. According to South Carolina’s Nurse Practice Act, MAs in the state fall into the category of “unlicensed assistive personnel,” or UAP. These personnel may only perform routine assistive tasks that do not require specialized training, such as those of a licensed nurse. In certain cases, nurses and physicians may delegate tasks to their assistants, but they must remain present to supervise. Examples of tasks MAs may perform include:
